Day One: Fanfic

Next up, eight fictional friendship that make me happy inside! Please feel free to join in (or not!) in comments with your own favourite friendships!

Day Two: Friendships

Alice and Luther!
(Luther)

Alice and Luther

She's every scriptwriter's favourite vision of a delightfully amoral psychopath! He's a maverick cop with questionable completely illegal methods but brilliant results! Together, they remind us that sometimes bad writing makes for AWESOME TV.

Have the first thirty seconds of a still very much in progress vid of mine about their friendship. Warning: Blood, violence, very brief animal harm.

(I should mention that the show REALLY likes its violence against women. For the first season, I would recommend watching the first two eps, reading manna's excellent recaps of the middle two eps and watching the final two eps.)

Meredith and Cristina
(Grey's Anatomy)

Meredith and Cristina

Dr Meredith Grey and Dr Cristina Yang are two driven, passionate, smart and compelling women whose strong friendship helps both of them be better, happier and more comfortable in their own skins. They are not about the hugs and the painting each other's nails -- they are about the sort of spiky, angry, stubborn, complicated support and understanding that works for them.

Cristina: "You want to get a drink?"
Meredith: "Yeah, I do. Maybe not a real drink, actually, because I'm trying to get pregnant, and supposedly, alcohol will make my baby have three heads and 16 toes."
Cristina: "Ohh. Want to get some crack cocaine?"

Lewis and Hathaway
(Lewis)

Lewis and Hathaway

What can I say about these guys that I haven't said before?

The other day CWG and I were discussing various different romance plots. Stalkers (grr), star-crossed lovers, they hate each other but then they grow to respect -- nay, love! -- each other, etc, etc.

I said that my favourite plots were the ones that focus on how the characters can be good for each other -- they learn from each other how to be happier or more at ease with themselves; they help each other grow as people; they find life a little easier to cope with when they can face it together.

"Oh," says CWG, who has never seen an episode of the show but, for her sins, has to put up with me and my pop culture obsession on a regular basis. "Like on Lewis?"

Kalinda and Alicia
(The Good Wife)

Kalinda and Alicia

Two minute clip of Kalinda and Alicia getting drunk and talking about life. (YouTube)

Transcript below, but the video is worth watching if you can for their body language and the sound of their laughter, which should sell you on their friendship better than anything I can say. Not terribly spoiler-y, but takes place late season one.

Transcript:

A wedding party dances past before we pan to Kalinda and Alicia, both obviously drunk, fight over Alicia's phone.

Kalinda: "Let. Go."
Alicia: "No."
Kalinda: "You know Will feels the same way about you."
Alicia: "No, he doesn't. And even if he did, it doesn't matter.
Kalinda: "It does. I phone Will, I tell him we're in the bar and you're too drunk to go home so you're getting a hotel room upstairs. Alicia. One night. No repercussions."
Alicia: "And tomorrow?"
Kalinda: "Tomorrow you wake up."
Alicia: "It's just not me, Kalinda."
Kalinda: "Everything is you. Everything you want to be you, is you."
Random guy: "You two are so hot."
Kalinda: *spits out her drink with laughter* "And, um, you are?"
Random guy: "Brian. The best man. What are you celebrating?"
Kalinda: "Tomorrow her husband is being freed from house arrest."
Random guy: "Really? All right. Uh. I'll get you both drinks. Yeah." *leaves*
Alicia: "Are you gay?" [pause] "Oh, come on. We are talking about every single little detail of my life. It's a simple question."
Kalinda: "I'm private."
Alicia: "Eugh. Come on."
Kalinda: "What does it matter?"
Alicia: "It doesn't."
Kalinda: "Then why do you want to know?"
Alicia: "Because I do. And how is this fair? I talk about everything."
Kalinda: "I didn't say it was. You like to talk about your life. I don't like to talk about mine."

Brad and Ray
(Generation Kill)

Brad and Ray

Brad! Ray! Ray! Brad!

He's a highly respected, highly skilled sergeant in the First Recon Marines, known for his keen fighting abilities and lack of patience with stupidity and incompetence. He's a dorky corporal in the same platoon, known for his ability to rant, rave and generally shoot the shit on any topic at a moment's notice. Together, they roll through Iraq in open-top Humvees, singing a cappella pop songs and swearing fluently.

(Whenever I squee about this series, I feel I should mention that Generation Kill is not a series about Iraq, Iraqis, the effects of the invasion or the bigger pictures. It's about a group of marines, their lives and experiences while they are in Iraq. Which is, y'know, I'm not criticising a bridge for not being a tunnel, but it is worth pointing out for those of you uninterested in bridges or needing tunnels.)

Becca and Alistair/Athena
(Huge)

Becca and Ali

Huge! Huge! I love this series so much! I am really, really glad it exists, for all that it only got ten episodes and deserved SO MANY MORE. You can find more pictures and enthusiasm here.

Becca and Ali are sweet and supportive and kind to each other, which is pretty much what both of them need most in the world. <3 They both need to be listened to and respected, and to a certain extent they can do this for each other.

Bailey and The Chief
(Grey's Anatomy)

Bailey and the Chief

Yes, I am putting two Grey's Anatomy friendships on here. Your point?

Dr Richard Webber, Seattle Grace's Chief of Surgery, doesn't have a lot of people in his life who will say no to him. Dr Miranda Bailey, kick-arse attending in general surgery, has a lot of people who respect her persona and (at least at the start of the show) not a lot of people who see her clearly enough to respect her for who she is.

Everyone needs someone who won't bullshit them. Everyone in Grey's Anatomy needs someone who will tell them when they are being epically, painfully stupid. And on this, as with so many other things, Bailey and the Chief have each other's backs.

Masood Ahmed and Jane Beale
(EastEnders)

Mas and Jane

a;lsdfjk! I love Mas and Jane's friendship! It's very rare in EastEnders for two potential romantic partners to be friends without any romantic/sexual complications ensuing. Mas and Jane know this, and have at one point considered having an affair on roughly those grounds -- they were both very angry/frustrated with their respective spouses and got as far as renting a hotel room and having a charmingly passion-free kiss before deciding that no, actually, not so much.

They make each other laugh, they listen to each other, they manage a surprisingly solid and nonjudgmental friendship despite their very different values. (Mas has disowned his son for being in a relationship with Jane's brother.) They really do care about each other very deeply. <3
